Innovation on the Back of a Delivery Rider

Last night while driving through Bengaluru traffic, I noticed something unusual.

A delivery rider in front of me was carrying a digital display screen on his back.
Not a printed ad. Not a sticker. A proper LED display showing a Swiggy promotion.

For a moment, I forgot about the traffic.
The display was bright, moving, and impossible to ignore.
As a marketing professional, my first thought was simple.

This is smart.

In a city full of hoardings, banners, and billboards, a moving digital ad in the middle of traffic is guaranteed attention. And it worked. I noticed the ad before I noticed the rider.

But the next thought that came to my mind was not about marketing.

It was about the person carrying it.

The rider already had the delivery bag.
Now he also had a digital screen attached to his back.
It had just rained in Bengaluru. Traffic was slow. Roads were packed.
And he was still riding through it all with extra weight.

I do not know if the rider gets additional incentive for carrying the display.
I hope he does.

Because this is not just delivery work anymore.
This is advertising work also.

From a brand perspective, this is innovative.
From a human perspective, it raises questions.

Does the rider get paid extra for this
Does this affect balance and safety while riding
Is the bright display distracting other drivers at night
How long can someone carry this every day in Bengaluru traffic

As someone who works in marketing, I appreciate the idea. It is clever, visible, and effective.

But as someone who watches the people behind the system, I could not stop thinking about the cost of that innovation.

Sometimes the most creative campaigns are carried on the backs of the people who already carry the heaviest load.

I parked my car, stepped out, and took this photo.
Not because the ad was good.
Because the story behind it stayed in my mind.

Innovation is good.
But it should never become extra weight for the person who has the least choice.
